Sense of Entitlement

I’m reading article after article about beaches and roads in my area being rammed full of people and cars to the point where things are gridlocked – both on the roads and on the beaches with no-one wanting to give up their space and their “right to be there”.

The day the above photo was taken we came back to the tiny car park where we’d part to find a fleet of about 10 cars had arrived and were trying to get into the space which was already at capacity. They were blocking people in and blocking the road. When it was suggested they go to the car park down the road which was bigger and may have spaces I was told by one lady she “wouldn’t walk anywhere.” Yes it did turn out that they were scattering an aunt’s ashes but it was a hot Sunday afternoon and other people were wanting to be out. But they wanted to do it then and so they felt they should be able to do it then. The same as with all these people who go to the beaches – they want to do it that day because it is nice and so they should be entitle to go where they want.

My daughter works in hospitality and she says, along with many others that I know in the hospitality industry, that people are getting ruder. They come in at busy times and demand a table and get angry if there isn’t one available, or if they are told the establishment is closing in half an hour. They want to eat in this place now and so feel entitle to do it as and when they want. She also says there are less people who say please and thank you, more small children allow to run about in busy restaurant with no heed for the safety of the child or the staff.

I remember many years ago someone allowing their child to run around the cinema during the film shouting. When I spoke to the parent I was told that if that was what he wanted to do he should be allowed to do it. I am told this sort of things has increased since lockdown, that sense that if they want to do that they should be able to no matter how it effects others.

As always I want to know where this sense of entitlement comes from. I’m told it has increased since we had those 18-24 months of lockdowns where we were restricted in what we did. But why?

Did Covid give us a fear of death? A fear of our own mortality? But then why should that make so many more behave individualistically and feel like they should be able to do what they want when they want? Wouldn’t/shouldn’t fear of death, of our own mortality, make us want to care for our fellow humans more, care for our planet more, just care more? But this doesn’t seem to be the case with a lot of people.

From reading various books about trauma and the research around it I think I might understand why a wee bit why people are reacting as they are. When one is scared one’s polyvagal nerve is out of sync and one’s autonomic nervous system is on high “meerkat”

[I’ve been using the concept of meerkat for being on high alter since I heard a talk by Jane Evans about 15+ years ago where she talked of the brain being like three animals – the meerkat which is primordial part of our brains which reacts to things and is on high alert and sends the adrenaline coursing through our bodies and would at one time have stopped us being eaten by a tiger, the elephant part which remembers everything even if it can’t remember why it should remember that – for instance as a baby a door slamming meant parent was in a bad mood so the quieter baby was the more chance of not being shouted at, who then as an adult goes quiet whenever any noise like a door banging happens because of that unconsciously remembered trauma, and then there is the monkey that is our conscious acting out life part which lives in the present but takes all its cues from the meerkat and elephant (be careful because some books call the meerkat the Chimp so that can be confusing!!)]

So I think that the reason so many people are feeling like they should be allow a table at a restaurant or pub whenever or to be able to go to the beach or for the whole family to turn up in different cars to scatter aunty’s ashes without cause of how busy things were or whatever when they want to is because they are living within that fear that covid and lockdown imposed on us. I am suspecting that lockdown triggered something else, some childhood trauma, some embedded generational trauma, and they are reacting, because reacting is what we do when our meerkat is running the show. Unless we know how to give those things to some higher power, to God, to The Universe, and bring our autonomic nervous system back into alignment and release the fears and trauma, then we will think and truly feel like we are entitle to things – whatever our “thing” is.

But – now here’s the scary part – unless one is aware of this, aware that one is reacting not acting, then there is no way of being able to unplug, to stop feeling like one ought to be allow on this beach, to have this table in this restaurant, to do as one wants when one wants. One probably doesn’t even know one is living with a sense of entitlement.

So whether it is the riots we’ve been experiencing, the queues to instagramable beaches, the bad mouthing when a meal out isn’t as we’d have wanted, the grumbling about our health and care services, our education system, etc nothing will change until people become more aware that they are reacting not acting.

Going back to the incident on Sunday I noticed, because I have been doing work on myself with QEC, that yes I did ask for the cars to be moved because we wanted to get out, and did say that I felt they were being unfair on other people, but I noticed I did not lose my temper [even when the man in the car next to us swore at us for not moving as quickly as he would have liked] and I didn’t have that horrid feeling in my stomach for ages after. It happened. I said what I needed to say and then I let it go. I acted but did not react.

Clean Monday procrastinating

Clean Monday – 18th March 2024

I did a piece last year for Clean Monday and only just remembered as the ideas fell into my head to write a piece this year

This year’s is taking a very different tack. I won’t go over what I wrote last time. You can read it if you want. This year I am much more focused on the cleaning angle.

Until March 2020 I rented the top two rooms out in my house with Airbnb. This meant that almost every day I was having to scrub down my house, check for dust, hidden dog toys, that we’d not left anything just lying about. It was a hard job but at that time I had the grace for it and almost enjoyed it. Then enter lockdown and Covid. My daughter lived with us for eleven of the main sixteen months. My husband was now working from home. There was no thought of anyone coming to stay over the 2020/21 period. So no real worry about keeping things too clean.

Lockdown ended. Daughter went back to her own town and back to work. Husband has continued working in the top small bedroom, venturing into his office occasionally but not regularly. All this gave me time to re-evaluate whether I wanted people staying in my house; to which the answer was No. The grace had gone and so it was time to move on with what I did with my time.

I’ve got more into my writing, into praying, into study, into coffee with friends. Life has changed. But so has my love of doing housework.

So with spring slowly appearing I have decided I need to give the house a real spring clean. I wrote the list. I planned out the rooms – what needed doing and how. I checked I had the required tools and products. I even checked the date to see what would be good one to start. What better date than today?

Or maybe tomorrow? Or when it’s warmer? Or just before we go on holiday? Or when we come back from holiday? Or just before certain friends come to stay? Or maybe I need to buy a steamer or a handheld hoover? Or perhaps I’ll do the car first? Or the garden? Or the dog?????

But then I realised how much I can be like this with my Christian life. I make the lists of what I want from this season, what books to read, the journal to write in, put an allotted time in my diary – and then …. Well there is always tomorrow. Next week. After the holidays. After friends come to stay. After I’ve bought a certain book. Perhaps the dog needs big hike in the woods and I could pray then/write poetry then/get closer to God then.

EXCUSES! Nothing more than excuses! A fear? Of what? Of the changes God might make?

Aren’t we good at finding plausible excuses?Yet the Bible has much to say about not putting off to tomorrow what you can do today. I thought there were only one or two but Open Bible has collected 46!!! Forty six bible verses that pertain to doing things when you say you’ll do them and not putting them off! Oh My Goodness!!!! That has certainly surprised me.

So perhaps I will get on and start on those spring cleaning chores. Though I think I’ll listen to Christine’s Liturgical Rebels podcasts as I do. Covering both the physical cleaning and a bit of spiritual cleaning too. And hopefully the biggest thing I’ll learn is not to put off till tomorrow what I am more than capable of doing today.

Feeling Uncreative

What do you do when you’re feeling uncreative?

I’ve got loads of books on my shelves on the subject. I’ve got loads of emails filed away. I’ve even got my own prompts I could work with. But when I’m feeling uncreative I “can’t be bothered”.

I’m wondering now if this post should be called “Can’t be bothered” because I was pondering writing this when I bumped into a dog walking acquaintance who started the conversation off saying about wanting to be motivated but ended it with “I know but I can’t be bothered.”

It seems to be a thing with lots of us at the moment – “can’t be bothered”. Is it covid, lockdowns, change, anxieties of this shifting world, getting older, or something else?

Sometimes it doesn’t matter what it is it is just an “is”. I don’t know why I’m feeling uncreative but I just am. It could be that I am feed up for not having any freelancing work to do, but lots in the pipeline – which really isn’t much help. It could be that the novel I’ve been plodding on with 1000 words a day has suddenly become a chore. And actually when I read back through it this isn’t just me being negative but I have lost all the depth of intrigue that I had in those beginning 10-20,000 words. It has gone stale and is starting to look like I’m just rushing to the end.

But actually I do do something when I am feeling uncreative and “can’t be bothered.”

I am kind to myself. I let myself be – not in that negative way but in a way that says “this is how I feel at the moment. It won’t last forever.” So the other morning I sat in the backyard with my book and enjoyed the cat looking at the flowers. Today I took myself for a long walk and coffee not for the benefit of finding something creative to write about but just to let the wind blow through my hair. I accepted that this is where I am at this moment in time. And as a friend used to say “These things will pass”.

By being kind to myself hopefully these feelings will pass, hopefully in a couple of days I’ll be able to look at my story again, in a bit I’ll be able to do more than read and play solitaire.

So my advise to anyone whether it is just a feeling of “mmuuuggghhh” or something deeper than this – be kind to yourself, accept this is how you are at this moment in time and know that “these things will pass”. Also don’t be afraid to tell others whether it is by talking or writing. As the old saying goes “a problem shared is a problem halved” and I think that doesn’t mean the person you tell has to help you sort it out but it is just about being open and honest about how you are at this moment in time.

Be bold, be brave and be honest.

Choosing Pathways

With all the talk of the war in Ukraine and it being hard to forget it I thought I would show you some pictures my walks over the weekend just for a change of focus.

My husband was away for the weekend so the dog and I were home alone and the sun was shining. I wanted to go to Newborough Forest and beach. My daughter and I had been there two years ago just before words like pandemic and lockdown became common place. The weather was similar this weekend to the one two years ago and I really wanted to go, yet I realised I was nervous. Nervous of driving 40 miles to Newborough. Guilty that there are lovely places closer to me. But my heart was really craving to go.

So on Saturday I tried to make my heart change its mind by going for a walk by the sea. It was only 10 miles from my house and I combined it with a trip to get some colour charts to repaint rooms in my house. So fear and guilt were dealt with there, and also dog and I got to walk by the sea and enjoy.

Interestingly on that Saturday walk due to the battering the shore has received in recent months we could not go on our usual walk but had to take the newly constructed coastal path which took us higher up and so the view was different. Noticeably different.

But it wasn’t what my heart wanted and so on Sunday morning I gave in and decided to go. I was amazed at how nervous I felt. I can easily drive 40 miles without thinking about it yet something was nagging at me. I really had time to pray about some of my older friends who have been doing nothing since March 2020. Once their stimulation of going to groups, clubs, shopping, driving places, interacting with others was taken away their brains and bodies have reacted. For one it has moved her dementia forward quicker than if she’d still had that stimulation. For another it has caused her body to stop wanting to eat and she is exhibiting signs of anorexia. Fears and anxieties have grown in others where before they could have talked them through with someone else. So even though I could feel my stomach churning I decided to keep driving. Newborough was where I wanted to go.

Of course dog and I had a lovely time but even there due to the rain and winds we did not find the same paths and had to go a different way, which again led us to a higher path. Once again we were looking down on something we had walked along before. We walked for 2 1/2 hours, probably about 7 miles. And the sun shone all the time. I am glad I pushed through and did not let my fears and guilts and anxieties win the day.

As as you see on each walk I found a higher path. I feel there is something significant in that. I had to push down fears that would have made me pick somewhere else, and in fact even in my trying to pick somewhere else still I walked along a higher path. So maybe it isn’t whether I deal with my fears or stick to the easier way that will lead me to a higher path? But whatever it is I know I need to overcome my fears and push through.

With the way the last three years have gone – with Brexit, Covid and now Ukraine, plus climate change, rising prices, etc, etc, etc – there are a lot of things to be fearful of. Yet I think after my weekend walks that we need to push through our fears and walk that higher path – however that looks to each one of us.

Who Guides Our Priorities?

How often have you wondered who guides what you priorities? What you focus on? What you worry most about?

Today there is much talk across the Christian community of Ash Wednesday being a day of prayer for Ukraine, which is great. It really is. But what about the other things? But if I dig a bit on various news-feeds I read about ethnic inequalities, massive inflation across the world, there is still a climate crisis, there are still people being persecuted in Afghanistan, Nigeria, Myanmar, and still people dying from Covid across the world. But it is hard to find out any other news.

I remember back in September 2011 when the twin towers were destroyed and all focus on was on them. A friend who worked with orphans in Africa said more children had died of starvation and AIDS in one day than had died in the twin towers. Or when Princess Diana was killed in a car accident the pastor of the church I was attending at that time asking us to pray for all the other people who had died in car accidents that night who would be lost under the media coverage of her death.

Don’t get me wrong, I do think this situation in Ukraine is awful as was the Twin Towers disaster, but I do think too often we then forget other things. We forget had forgotten that there had been Russian oppression in parts of Ukraine for over 10 years because the media got bored and turned us to other things. We get bored of hearing the same thing day in day out.

We are fickle human beings and, I believe, more so now with 24 hour news, internet access, etc. I think too that if this conflict in Ukraine hits a point where there are no big headlines we will move on to something else.

Is it that we don’t care? I don’t believe that at all. But I do think it is because when we are bombarded with news and information day in day out our brains cannot cope so we shut off. And then the media needs to keep us watching the news, reading papers, scrolling through the internet, because they earn money that way. So they will find us the next thing to be drawn into, the next thing to worry about, the next thing that we give our money to.

This isn’t wrong but it is just the way it is. Can we change? Maybe this is about again looking at aligning with God, with the Universe and fixing on that and being willing to go for whatever we are called to for the long haul – which is hard.

Are you, am I, willing to take time out and find out what my true focus is or am I, are you, going to be swayed by the winds of the world?

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.
